Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Toujeo DoubleStar (insulin glargine) is a basal insulin administered via an injection pen. It can be utilized by both type 1 and type 2 diabetics.

As a basal insulin, Toujeo DoubleStar provides the body with a baseline insulin slowly released over a 24-hour period. While it is a powerful basal insulin, it is still a background insulin; it is not meant to manage high blood glucose spikes, such as occur following a meal. This means type 1 diabetics require a fast-acting insulin to lower glucose spikes, and type 2 diabetics may or may not need a fast-acting insulin depending on the severity of the condition and other antidiabetic medications being taken.

All patients thinking about buying Toujeo DoubleStar should first consult a physician, ideally one who specializes in treating diabetes.

DoubleStar versus SoloStar

Toujeo DoubleStar and the similarly-named Toujeo SoloStar differ only in quantity. Each pen contains 300 units insulin glargine per milliliter (ml). Those who buy Toujeo DoubleStar will receive one or more (depending on amount purchased) pens each of which contains 3 ml, or 900 units of insulin glargine. Those who buy Toujeo SoloStar will receive pens each of which contain half that amount; 1.5 ml or 450 units of insulin glargine. This difference in quantity can help prevent waste once dosage is determined.

Each pen contains multiple doses and can be reused. Unopened pens should be kept refrigerated, though they should not be frozen. Once opened and the first dose is administered, pens should not be refrigerated. Instead keeping them at room temperature is fine for up to four weeks after the pen was first opened, after which it should be discarded. So, if a SoloStar pen would be used completely well before the four weeks is up, patients may do better to buy Toujeo DoubleStar. Conversely, if a DoubleStar pen would have excess medication in it by the four-week mark, patients would do better to buy the SoloStar.

All patients who buy Toujeo DoubleStar should be aware that the units describing dose strength with this product are unique to Toujeo; they are not interchangeable with other insulin products, even if they contain the same active ingredient, such as Lantus or Basaglar. Always make sure the correct brand was received after purchase, whether online or from a brick & mortar pharmacy.

Administration of Toujeo DoubleStar

Administration of this medication, as mentioned above, is via an injection pen. Once dosage has been established---which is best done by a doctor---administration is simple:

  • Pens can be adjusted to deliver the correct dose
  • The medication is administered just once per day
  • Injection sites include the abdominal area, the thighs, or the deltoids
  • Injection sites should be rotated each day to reduce risk of skin irritation
  • Do not remove the insulin glargine solution to administer by any other method

A doctor will explain and show the patient how to use the pen, and instructions are included in the leaflet that comes with each product as well.

Dosage is more complicated, and patients will want to involve a doctor. It can vary according to age, weight, and other such personal variables; it will also vary according to the type of diabetes, patient response to treatment, other medications being taken, and so forth. It is not possible to broadly give dose guidelines.

The medication clearly provides benefit, however, in three ways:

  • Replaces insulin not produced by the body
  • Promotes glucose absorption from the blood into other tissues
  • Inhibits the liver's production of glucose

The above all help keep a steady baseline of insulin, which can improve a patient's quality of life---sometimes quite significantly---in mitigating the highs and lows of fluctuating blood glucose and reducing the risk of diabetic complications, which can ultimately be fatal if untreated.

Type 1 diabetics, who are incapable of producing significant amounts of insulin, will need a fast-acting insulin for use after meals. Toujeo DoubleStar is not meant to protect against blood glucose spikes; it is a long-acting baseline treatment to help regulate blood glucose between meals and during sleep.

Type 2 diabetics are more complicated with respect to this medication, as some produce plenty of insulin but the body does not utilize it correctly, and others no longer produce enough insulin. Many do buy Toujeo DoubleStar---it improves the absorption of glucose---but dosage is much more variable and other non-insulin based medications are sometimes taken as well. Type 2 patients may or may not be advised to take a fast-acting insulin following meals or other high blood glucose-inducing activities, it varies according to each individual patient. Again, a doctor's involvement is very important.
